Selamat Datang! (Sarawak, Day 1)

Selamat Datang means welcome, and we certainly felt that way when we arrived in Sarawak. We hadn't accounted for the morning rush hour in KL, so we missed our original flight to Kuching. No worries! A $50 last-minute ticket had us on our way on the next Air Asia flight an hour later. By mid-day, we had arrived in Sarawak. The hornbill depicted here in this statue is the state bird of Sarawak, and its image is found everywhere. This was a Welcome to Sarawak statue just outside the airport.

Katie and I enjoyed the ride in the private tour bus that we had hired to take us around Sarawak.

We headed from the airport to the Borneo Highlands Resort, which is about an hour south of town, where the coastal plane gives way to the mountainous rainforest.

On the way, we passed a few rural villages.

Pictures from the resort and much more coming tonight!
