Sarawak Day 3 - Damai Beach

30km north of Kuching on the South China Sea is Damai Beach, a small beach resort with a few hotels and our resort, the Permai Rainforest Camp. Permai Camp follows an eco-resort concept, and we stayed in treehouses on the beach in a very rustic setting. Here's the view from the beach back towards Mount Santubong.

You can just glimpse one of the treehouses peeking out of the tree line looking over the beach. There are several treehouses in this picture but the resort preserved the trees rather than make clearings to increase the view. This shot was taken at low tide. In the morning, the water was nearly all the way to the tree line. Walking among the rocks was a lot of fun, lots of little crabs would scurry as we moved through.
The South China Sea in the evening. On the horizon towards the left is the gray outline of an island known as Turtle Island, with the head pointed to the right.

Look closely, our treehouse is in there!

We ended the night at a local seafood restaurant that the front desk recommended. The family that owned the restaurant advertised free transport. A worker arrived with his private car to take us to the restaurant! We were the first to arrive at the restaurant, so we were very well attended to, which meant that they personally came around and smushed any mosquitos that landed on us! "Excuse me, mosquito!" *squish* That took some getting used to, but eventually the restaurant filled up, the mosquito repellant that they were burning kicked in, and the superb seafood was expertly prepared for a very tasty feast. This black crab pictured below was presented to us in his live form just minutes earlier.
