Step Up for Down Syndrome 2012

At the end of September we headed to our first Step Up for Down Syndrome event, the Twin Cities' annual support and fundraising walk.  We knew it would be a fun morning, but we were not prepared for the size and scale of it!  Thousands upon thousands of people were out in Como Park, and there was a "big game / tailgating" atmosphere.  Not only did most of the participants have their own custom-designed team shirts, but they also had their own picnic tents and grills and the whole works.  There were concessions and bounce houses and live bands.  About 8,000 people attended!

When the walk itself got started, the line of people stretched as far as you could see.  It was pretty impressive!

We got out on the trail and started walking the two mile loop around the lake.  Henry just kicked back and enjoyed the ride!  He especially liked all of the dogs that would come up alongside him during the walk.

We were joined by the Richards clan, too!  It was a fun way to spend a morning with them.  Here they are on a mid-walk water break.

The walk was hugely successful, and we'll be more prepared next year (team slogans, anyone?)  It was a humbling sight to see the level of support and size of the Down Syndrome community in the Twin Cities.  We're really looking forward to the 2013 walk now!
