Winter Catch-Up Part 3

It's turning cold outside this week, so it seems only fitting that I should finish blogging about LAST winter before this winter arrives!  This post covers February and March 2013.

By the time February rolled around, we were all getting a little stir crazy - the second half of winter was snowier than the first.  That didn't stop us from getting out and about though!  We just bundled up and piled in the car.

One of Henry's favorite winter stops is Choo Choo Bob's, a toy train store over in St. Paul.  They have six fully stocked train tables to play with!  Henry can easily spend an hour playing with the trains.

The Minnesota Zoo is another fantastic winter destination, because much of it is indoors.  The fish tanks are always Henry's favorite spots.  He will sit and watch fish, mesmerized, for the entire trip sometimes.

As winter went on, Henry was getting more adventurous on the sled, too.  On this day, Henry was taking his first solo runs down a hill.  The faster the better!

Another important milestone came in February when Henry had his tonsils and adenoids removed.  Here he is pre-surgery... the waiting room had lots of fun things to keep his mind off of surgery.

...and here he is post-surgery.  He was a heck of a trooper - this was one tough surgery!  It was a full two week recovery, but he handled it with grace and courage.

After he recuperated, he got back to work on his novel...

...and caught up on his computer science studies.

In a couple of weeks, he was back to his usual, silly self.  Posing with the cousins.

Gigi's Playhouse had their annual gala in February.  It was a rare opportunity for us to get dressed up and hit the town for a night.  They had a silent auction, a great dinner, and a fantastic and inspirational keynote speaker who happened to have Down syndrome and was attending the University of Iowa!

One sunny weekend, we took a day trip down to Red Wing in southeastern Minnesota.  We had lunch in their historic downtown and then wandered over to the train depot so that Henry could see the big freight trains pass by.  He was a little frightened by the noise, but liked it overall.

We always look forward to March, since it starts with Katie's birthday.  Here she is blowing out the candles on her all-time favorite cake, the custard angel food cake from Wuollet's.

Henry also spent some time in March practicing his independent eating.  He did great with the spoon!

Any more in there?

Pause for cuteness overload...

March was pretty brutal weather-wise.  The air was dry...

The farm fields were snowy...

And the flakes just kept on falling week after week after week.

It's enough to make you want to hibernate.

Nothing a playdate party with friends Sam and Caleb can't fix!

We also took advantage of Gigi's Playhouse for more wintertime fun.  Henry was getting more confident on his feet so he liked practicing basketball in the gym.

He also worked on some puzzles with mommy.

March is also a special month because it brings Down Syndrome Awareness Day, 3/21.  We celebrated with our "Special Day" banner.

Henry didn't mind the extra attention one bit.

The other really cool thing that happened at the end of March is that Yaya and Papou moved into their apartment!  This is the same -exact- duplex apartment they lived in when they first got married.  Katie's brother Ben was born when they lived in this house!  It just happened to be for rent - what luck!

At the end of the month, our grass started to make an appearance in the backyard!  Was spring just around the corner?

Nope.  It was still a long way off.  A very frozen lake was a good reminder of that.

So, we just stayed warm and cozy inside for a little while longer.
See you again soon!
