This was taken last night, and this morning we saw mom and dad bluebird sitting on the power wires out front having their morning coffee before another day of food gathering for the hungry brood. In related news, it turns out we had a couple of wren families nesting in the yard right under our noses! One family was in one of our flowerboxes the past couple months without us even realizing it. By the time I found the nest, the babies had fledged, but there's another wrens' nest in a small evergreen next to the driveway. Earlier this week, while walking by, I was startled by some VERY clumsy sounding wing flapping! I peered into the bush and saw two baby wrens! One was taking its first flights, from the branches to the bricks on the side of the house and back. Its sibling was sitting on a branch, looking entirely unimpressed with its sibling's flapping about and much more unsure of the whole thing. By the time we got home from work, they were both gone, off to bigger adventures.
Given that the bluebirds aren't vocalizing or moving around the nest a whole lot yet, we may be able to squeeze in one last check, but we're not sure yet. Stay tuned.
