San Antonio

Another week, another whirlwind business trip, this time to San Antonio for a last-minute speaking engagement. It was my first visit to San Antonio, so I used what little free time I had to see the top attractions, the Alamo and the Riverwalk.

The striking thing about the Alamo is how small it is. It's really just a little building on a single city block in the middle of downtown San Antonio. It was once a much larger complex but there are only two buildings remaining, including the shrine, which is the one everyone thinks of when they think of the Alamo...

The nice thing is that it is free to explore, so I walked around the grounds for about an hour. The other remaining building houses a museum of the history of the Alamo and the area. The rest of the city block contains very nice gardens...

That particular corner of the grounds has a fountain dedicated to Davey Crockett, one of the men who died here when the Mexican Army besieged and eventually overran the Alamo.

I ate several meals at the restaurants along the Riverwalk, which is a couple of miles worth of riverside walkways which wind through downtown San Antonio one level below street level. It is really unique, and the nice thing is once you get down onto the walk the city above is a world away. It is shady and pleasant as tour boats and taxis go up and down the waterway and all of the people are dining al fresco on the various restaurant patios. Here's a shot of a particularly scenic stretch of the Riverwalk.

It was a brief taste of San Antonio but I think it would make a great place to explore for a weekend, and it's only a two hour flight from Birmingham.
